Our rich history
Fort Werk IV is a unique defense structure that was part of the New Dutch Waterline, once intended to protect the Netherlands from enemy attacks. Built around 1870, the fort is located at the highest point of the Bussummer Eng and is the last remaining part of a line of five forts. The fort is surrounded by a 'dry moat' with a crenellated wall featuring shooting holes – a special element that can be found nowhere else in the Netherlands. This unique architecture makes Fort Werk IV a national icon and a national monument of great value.
